VIJAYLAKSHMI (As she was known before SILK SMITHA Came alive on the screen)was born in Sept.1960 at Eluru in the backwaters of Andhra Pradesh into a family that was deeply steeped in poverty where even one meal was actually a luxury that they could rarely afford. At the age of 16 her beauty was noticed even though she was malnourished and badly starved yet the fire in her eyes did not go unnoticed and she was adopted by the Andhra Pradesh film industry.

Not many people are aware that she actually worked as a full fledged heroine as VIJAYLAKSHMI till her film 'Silk Silk Silk' arrived and for that film she was rechristened SILK SMITHA after which there was absolutely no looking back. In a career that spanned 20 years SILK SMITHA emerged as a cinematic icon a virtual living Legend till her mentor and guide Dr.RADHAKRISHNA started to misguide her and coaxed her to put in her hard earned money into films that badly bombed.

Even then had she pulled out and returned back to films or even gone into retirement as she always wanted to settle in Nice (South of France)as she told me during the course of several interviews in various locations at Chennai things could have been salvaged and SILKU would still have been alive and amongst us (Can U imagine Dear SILK SMITHA would actually be 49 today had she been alive). Greed and emotional blackmail on the part of her friend-philospher & mentor guide Dr. RADHAKRISHNA drove her to commit suicide when her debts went out of control.

If only better sense had prevailed and she had been firm in not picking up huge loans at exorbitant interest rates when her films as a producer started flopping left right and center she could have possibly saved the situation but not having her finances in her hands and depending on her mentor made her emotionally unstable and she first drowned herself and her miseries first in alcohol and eventually took the fatal step and committed suicide on 23rd.Sept.1996 when she was found hanging to her fan in her bedroom.

There are still many who even a dozen years after her death disbelieve that someone like SILK SMITHA could actually commit suicide considering the poverty she had seen first hand in her growing years till she actually turned 16. They feel that there was a lot more than met the eye and she could possibly have been killed and given the shape of suicide from vested interests who were worried that she had seen their true colors and would take drastic measure to salvage the damage done and they would be left empty handed in the cold.Why else was her suicide hushed up and the investigations shut down prematurely a few moths later?

But none the less whether it was cold blooded murder presented as suicide or actually a moment of insanity that led an emotionally disturbed SILK SMITHA to end her life the damage had been done and that could never be repaired ever again.
